Landscape painters did occasionally paint landscapes celebrating the triumph of civilization and technology over nature. However, such paintings were usually done reluctantly. This painting was commissioned by the Lackawanna Railway Company. At first, the painter, George Inness, was repelled by the idea since he did not regard technology as a suitable subject for landscape painting. In the end, Inness undertook the project to see if he could produce a pleasant result, despite the distasteful subject matter.
